What They Don’t Tell You About Parabens

Made4Baby is named that because of the 4 things we never use in our skincare products:

  • No harsh detergents
  • No petrochemicals
  • No artificial colours or fragrances
  • No parabens

Today we want to talk about that sneaky chemical found in so many cosmetics: parabens.

What are parabens?

Parabens are preservatives that stop mould and bacteria growing in products and increase their shelf life.

Unfortunately, scientific studies suggest that parabens also affect hormones, fertility, increase cancer rates and cause skin irritations.

They have also been linked with various ecological concerns such as dying coral reefs as they are washed out with all your waste water.

Not exactly the kind of thing you want to put on your baby’s skin!

How to avoid parabens in skin care products

There are a couple of ways you can reduce parabens in your daily routine

  • Look for them on labels- they are usually labelled as Propylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Ethylparaben
  • Don’t leave it on your skin- If you are using products that contain parabens, don’t use ones that are left on the skin for extended periods of time- skin absorbs everything!
  • Choose paraben free products- To be safe, it is best to choose products that avoid parabens altogether (we happen to know a great brand 😉)

With love,

Rebecca

P.S. Sorry somehow we loaded up a pic of hubbie in Paris – this one is definitely me in the lab where all the magic happens!
